A Little Rascals Summer - august 23, 2003

The Little Rascals, what a strange and inventive escape.
I always dug the adventures and shows they put on.
Even put a few shows on and charged admission myself as a young child.
Most everyone I know can reference a show and everyone has a favorite.
I named 2 of my cats Butch & Darla.
The names actually fit the cats personalities very well.

For me it's part innocence that seems to be lost as well as the fact you seldom see many children playing outside anymore. Not to mention the under-use of imagination.

But............
this summer has been a Little Rascals summer......

It all started with the chasing of the ice cream man.
Sophie and I have done this since she was about 3,
now 5.
She was smart enough, or maybe it was Pavlov conditioning, but as soon as twilight hit she would want to go for a walk. It took me a couple o times to catch on. so we would go for a walk, and then we would hear the ice cream man and go in search of.

This year we are in a different neighborhood, but the ice cream man is still there. So I'm on my way home from work, and I hear him then I see him, and i think of "chasing the ice cream man." I get home and Sophie's crying, cause Grandma & Grandpa have no clue as to the importance of the "man." So I grab her and we chase him down, and get our prize.

The next adventure begins with waiting for "fireflies" to appear. They finally make their appearance and every evening we are outside running around trying to catch as many as possible. We always let them go and say thank you and good by.

One day I'm driving through the neighborhood and there's 2 little girls selling lemonade, and i wondered if they had made any money. But it didn't really matter because the fact that they were sitting on the side of the road selling lemonade was what really mattered, or at least to me. And no i didn't stop to buy any, not sure why.

A week or two later, same neighborhood, I see 2 boys riding their bikes oblivious to the heat.
One boy has a huge fishing net that had a huge... fish in it.

I laughed and thought how cool it was that they had caught it without poles, and imagined a little rascals scenario.

Another day we played in the puddles after the rain, and later we drove around looking for the ever elusive end of the rainbow.

Most nights end in a water balloon fight and or dancing with spark-a-lers.
I went home for lunch today and found Sophie in costume.
I loved it.
I encourage the wearing of costumes at home and most places we go.
I'd wear them more often if i could get away with it.

The finale...
As I'm on my way back to work, and pondering my Little Rascals summer, a red Cardinal flies in front of the car.
And i know it's not over yet................
